Illinois Gets $3.5 Million Windfall From Late License Plate Renewals

In October 2015, during a budget crisis, the State of Illinois suspended mailings of license-plate-renewal reminders in order to save money on postage.  One unanticipated benefit for the state’s coffers (and detriment to residents’ wallets): Illinois has banked $6.5 million in late fees so far, a $3.5 million increase from the previous year.
